Clinical Skills Training For Austwide Locums Affiliated Doctors

In a first for locum agencies Austwide Locums has concluded arrangements with the course Directors at the Simulation Units at Royal North Shore and St Vincents hospitals that opens up attractive new opportunities for clinical skills training.

Doctors affiliated with Austwide locums are encouraged and supported to attend one or more of these courses where they see it as appropriate. We are happy to cover the full cost of the St Vincents programme and will heavily subsidise the more extensive 2 day course at Royal North Shore.

Session Duration 4 hours

Royal North Shore Hostpital - Sydney Medical Simulation Centre

Emergency Medicine Crisis Management (EMCM)

Participants receive intensive hands-on training using high fidelity immersive simulation, skills and drills training, problem-based learning, group discussion and other training methods.

Course Aims

  • Prepares emergency medicine doctors to manage serious acute problems.
  • Develops skills in crisis management, team leadership, communication and Human Factors.

Applied Knowledge

  • A systematic approach to the sick patient in the Emergency Department.
  • Management of common emergencies encountered in the ED environment: airway obstruction, acute respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, shock, arrhythmias, neurological, coma, seizures, poisoning, electrolyte and environmentally acquired disorders.
  • Team-leadership, teamwork and commmunication, crisis management, human error.

Skills

  • Airway: Intubation in suspected C-spine injury; difficult intubation strategies, surgical airway, Laryngeal Mask Airway.
  • Breathing: O2 therapy, positive pressure ventilation via endotracheal tube; BiPhasic Positive Airway Pressure [BiPAP].
  • Cardiovascular: Advanced Cardiac Life Support; Defribillation, synchronised DC Cardioversion, Trans-cutaneous cardiac pacing.
